Met many friends had not seen since long. Place overcrowded and noisy. Afterwards lecture and [[strikethrough]] mov [[/strikethrough]] cinema about Ethopia by one of the members. [[red underline]] Lecture room full of smoke and badly ventilated. [[/red underline]] Noise and smoke do not agree with me. Celine much better but still in bed 
[underline]] Dec 8. [[/underline]] (Sunday) Much paper work, study & reading
[[underline]] Dec. 9 [[/underline]] At office. Celine still in bed 
[[underline]] Dec 10. [[/underline]] Celine up & well. But George [[strikethrough]] stays [[/strikethrough]] had to stay home on account of a cold. Redman in my office. We discussed Catalin case. I gave him the history of prior art.

[[red underline]] Dr. Duggan [[/red underline]] invited me, [[red underline]] Wickersham and 4 [[/red underline]] others, [[red underline]] professors etc. to meet André Sigfried [[/red underline]] for private luncheon at Century Club, where we discussed present [[strikethrough]] for [[/strikethrough]] international troubles [[red underline]] Sigfried showed difference [[/red underline]] with these [[red underline]] "peasants" and our farmers [[/red underline]] specially our one crop farming like wheat farming or cotton farming, which makes them very dependent because unlike the French peasants they are not producing enough variety to be independently supporting themselves and family. Instead of raising their own vegetables, cattle etc. they buy canned goods and run their farm as if it were [[strikethrough]] a one [[/strikethrough]] as a one article factory. Hence the farming element in France never gets to the dependent poverty condition we have here, and mortgaged farms on which they cannot pay [[end page]]

the overdue mortgage. [[red underline]] French farmers on the contrary represent the real wealth of France [[/red underline]] as well as the [[red underline]] steady element. [[/red underline]] It is the French farmer who [[red underline]] buys the Government bonds [[/red underline]] with the money he saves by living a frugal but comfortable and independent life. International situation between Italy, England France, Germany etc. are more in a mess than ever. 
[[underline]] Dec 12 [[/underline]] This morning at 11 A.M gave my annual [[red underline]] lecture in Columbia, [[/red underline]] before the graduating class of Chemical Engineering students, also the older chemical students. Most of my colleagues were there. Room was filled to the utmost. - My subject: The [[red underline]] Human factor [[/red underline]] in Chemical industries was very well received [[strikethrough]] Dr. Rok [[/strikethrough]] Dr. Wilhelm C. [[red underline]] Roehrs, [[/red underline]] one of the chemists of [[red underline]] Bakelite, Gesellschaft, [[/red underline]] who is here on a visit was there also. Afterwards took him to luncheon at Faculty Club with McKee, Turner, Jackson, Morgan, Hixson and Ole Sand one of our Bloomfield Chemists who acts as guide to Roehrs - Then to office. George is still in bed but feels better

[[underline]] Dec 15 [[/underline]] (Sunday) Here all day, further studying [[red underline]] Catalin [[/red underline]] case etc. 
[[underline]] Dec 16. [[/underline]] [[red underline]] Thiele [[/red underline]] met me and Rossi at 10 A.M Says cannot do better than what he offered before us to license of Catalin. Told him we had been advised by our lawyers that [[red underline]] it would be very dangerous for us to accept a license stipulating [[/red underline]]
