Drove with Andrew Murray to Matecumbe Key to see effects of last falls Hurricane. All along the road over Key largo effects of storm were not very apparent. But nearing Tavernier and Isla Morada, destruction of buildings, trees, railroad washed away and wreckage everywhere. Road is being remade and concrete shelter houses are being built by Federal help.
The whole R.R. bridge connecting the Matecumbes with Long Key have been washed away and houses swept away. Also the old very tall Coconut Palms, which dated from earliest settlements have been almost all destroyed. Ferry Dock at Matecumbe looks as if it had been bombed or destroyed by Earth Quake. Everything looks desolate. R.R. has ceased operation since the September Hurricane about 250 persons killed. It looks as if R.R were not to be rebuilt and will be replaced by a solid road for motor cars or omnibuses.

in favor. I do not know him. Never have met him. George studied with him in Cornell. Is about 3 years older than George. Wrote him a letter telling him that many marriages turn out unsatisfactorily because both contracting parties do not realise their full duties towards their children, by giving them a bad example of egotism and lack of generous spirit and behavior. But that I send him my best wishes. I wonder whether Nina will be able to profit by her mistakes with George Roll, or after the first enthusiasm is over she will start again her bossy irritating ways. I hope she will have the will to adapt herself better, and her children may fare well.
This afternoon had the visit of Mr. Fisher painter of sea and boats and exploring scenes. Also his wife who is a daughter of Admiral Sigsbee. Pleasant people.
