Afternoon had visit of Cary Hutchinson who returns to New York & of R.W. Harrison.  Evening paid short visit to Fairchilds.  Had long letter from Celine describing wedding ceremony of Nina at camp.  Only immediate family present.  Nina's children all present except Ninette who is still ill in her boarding school.  Everything done with simple dignity.  Peter got a fish hook in his tigh and needed antitoxin injection after it was cut out with a razor blade.
[[underlined]] May 15. [[\underlined]]  Another busy day, preparing for departure. - Some rain showers, much needed after long drought.
Letter from George Roll who is much impressed by intelligence and conduct of Celine and his other children.  Celine Roll dearly wants to go on a cruise with me he says.  Miami Herald published fact of Farm Chemurgic Council honor also of my recent election to National Academy of Sciences.

[[underlined]] May 17 [[\underlined]] (Sunday)  here all day preparing & packing.
[[underlined]] May 18. [[\underlined]]  Andrew asked increase of pay.  Told him he must wait will end of year, when I intend to supplement according to performance.  That I treat the men who work for me or who have worked for me, in a manner above the average employer.  If however he is dissatisfied or knows of a better position he should let me know so that I may engage another man.  Says he has no other position in view.  I did not like the sulky way he told me this.  I told him also that his wife in her lack of manners had offended several of my friends.  He seemed astonished at this.
[[underlined]] May 19 [[\underlined]]  Andrew seems to have lost his sulky attitude.  Last night thunder & abundant rain much needed
[[underlined]] May 20 [[\underlined]]  Received a very interesting letter from [[?Lansing]] Hays, describing the so-called "Old timers of Bakelite" meeting. - Golf, baseball, speeches at Montclair Golf Club.  "Old Timers" means men who have been in Bakelite employ for at least 10 years.
