[[red underlined]] Celine [[/red underlined]] back since noon. [[red underlined]] Tells me about troubles George has had with his wife. Her fearful cynical behavior, [[/red underlined]] how she has tried to [[red underlined]] discredit George thru her children. [[/red underlined]] Her [[red underlined]] lazy selfishness and reluctance for any serious duties. How she tries [[/red underlined]] to flirt with everybody. How George since many years has stood it passively. How finally he had to give it up, and a [[red underlined]] divorce seems the only relief. [[/red underlined]] Anything else will only get worse. She wants her "freedom" and try to pose and shine before her male admirers free from any restraint and unmindful of its effect on her children. [[red underlined]] Celine tells [[/red underlined]] me [[red underlined]] Cornelia even went so far as to take Dickie, her daughter to road-houses [[/red underlined]] at night so as to be able to go there dancing among the usual kind of customers. - [[red underlined]] George [[/red underlined]] has [[red underlined]] taken Dicky along with him to Europe, [[/red underlined]] so as to avoid having to witness the baneful behavior of Cornelia during his absence. I had hoped that all this was only a family quarrel, which with friendly concessions on both sides might have adjusted itself. I now see that the matter is much more serious and that a divorce is the best solution. But what next? - How will it influence the life, the spirit, the further influence on the children? What an example of them. - It is bad enough if children have a bad father, but [[red underlined]] I pity any children who have any reason to cease respect for their mother. I feel intensely discouraged. [[/red underlined]] Wondering what children of such a frivolous mother are to become. Then again, George may marry again, with a woman who wants him for his money and the same story may start all over again.
[[underlined]] Sept. 14. [[/underlined]] Bright sunny day. Stayed in Yonkers.
