[[/underline]] Balance G.I.Co = [[red underline]] 169,609 [[/red underline]] This afternoon had visit of [[red underline]] James Otis Handy [[/red underline]] (see [[red underline]] Who's Who and A.C.S. [[/red underline]]) his wife and daughter, the latter married. Showed them garden etc. He now lives in Orlando.

[[/underline]] Took [[red underline]] Celine & Mrs. Fairchild to the Moorish Castle on Biscayne Bay [[/red underline]] where they intend to spend the day and the night till tomorrow afternoon when shall return with the Ion. Took this opportunity to establish [[red underline]] speed of Ion with new Diesel. [[/red underline]]

So went to [[red underline]] Soldier Key [[/red underline]] did some fishing (Grunts) then by timing between 2 beacons established [[red underline]] 8 Knots speed. [[/red underline]] Weather moderate wind on S.B. I also used the log which I watched carefully. At first It worked well, then it stopped 2 or 3 times but resumed tuning at slower speed. - Then suddenly stopped entirely. I pulled in the line to find that [[red underline]] a fish, shark or Baracuda [[/red underline]]

[[red underline]] had bitten off the bronze [[/red underline]] propeller of the log. The distance between 2 beacons and time gave us the necessary readings = 8 Knots, engine full speed. While we were navigating a small very pretty & cheerful little bird came aboard, ran around the deck, sat near my knee or near the rudder which flew in and out the cabin windows and behaved as tame as if it had known us. Finally when we reached my harbor it flew away into the trees of our garden.

After luncheon took the ION out with Andrew and Rowe (colored) to the [[red underline]] Moorish castle [[/red underline]] to find out whether the ladies were all right. Mrs. Fairchild said yes. - [[red underline]] Celine [[/red underline]] was out on the Oceanside [[red underline]] painting [[/red underline]] 
So we proceeded to test what speed can be attained with the [[red underline]] emergency outboard [[/red underline]] gasoline [[red underline]] motor [[/red underline]] recently purchased and attached solidly on the stern of the Ion by means of a bronze attachment. The tide was flowing in and the wind - light breeze was S.E Distance from beacon to Beacon was 1 1/8 Naut. Mile. We made 2 runs one Northerly towards Miami and one Southerly back. - The results were as follows:
