Rain & very windy.  Drove to Kendall's.  [[red underlined]] Whole family there. His eldest son grown up, [[/red underlined]] studies at [[red underlined]] Cambridge and wears spectacles. [[/red underlined]]  Hearty reception.  His daughters there, also a [[red underlined]] South African from Orange-Free State, [[/red underlined]] who besides English speaks [[red underlined]] Afrikaans [[/red underlined]] and Zulu!!

Mrs. [[red underlined]] Kendall drove Kendall and myself to the new laboratory's [[/red underlined]] of chemistry lecture room & museum, then around hills etc.  Then [[red underlined]] Kendall to his club [[/red underlined]] (University Club) to meet 3 of his friends [[red underlined]] All good listeners to my stories.  A most enjoyable afternoon. [[/red underlined]] When we left it was 10.30 P.M and still bright.
[[underlined]] June 29. [[/underlined]]  Hotel was more crowded than yesterday on account of Coronation festivities of next week.  [[red underlined]] Bought a new gray felt hat $8.00 [[/red underlined]]  K. took me to [[red underlined]] Royal Society [[/red underlined]] and library then luncheon at University Club.

[[red underlined]] Lord Suffolk grandson of Leiter and son of Lord Curzon, [[/red underlined]] whom his mother [[red underlined]] (Miss Leiter) [[/red underlined]] is the widow of Lord Curzon?; also Charles Roy [[red underlined]] Nasmith U.S. Consul [[/red underlined]] in Edinburgh who was stationed in [[red underlined]] Ghent [[/red underlined]] and knows Frederic, and whose daughter was born in Ghent, - a very genial man; also the following:

The latter drove us around in his car to the surrounding country then to an old [[strikethrough]] In [[/strikethrough]] [[red underlined]] Inn at the Forth of Firth [[/red underlined]] Bridge.
Celine's train arrived 7 P.M.  Supper together.  Slept well.

[[red underlined]] Kendall [[/red underlined]] took me to meet his [[red underlined]] colleagues at the new Chemistry Department [[/red underlined]] on West Maines Rd. an assemblage of several well planned

buildings and lecture rooms, built recently and occupying a vast open space with mountains in background.  Excellently conceived laboratories, simple, purposefull and excellent lighting from glass roof.

Lunch at Kendall's with Celine then both walked back to hotel.  Fine stores fresh fish; [[red underlined]] herring everywhere [[/red underline]]  Everywhere many people. [[red underlined]] Clean streets [[/red underlined]] and side walks.  Impressive old and orderly city.

This evening while eating a sandwich at hotel. Bumped against [[red underlined]] Sir d'Arcy Townsend, [[/red underlined]] who accompanied by his daughter was going to [[red underlined]] R.S. meeting [[/red underlined]] in London, hurrying for his train.

[[underlined]] July 1 [[/underlined]] Went [[red underlined]] strolling over town: [[/red underlined]] ascended Monument Hill. Hazy misty perspective due to soft coal smoke that darkens all buildings.  Went also to [[red underlined]] Scotch Museum [[red underlined]] of Antiques and Paintings, well kept and very interesting.  When one see the [[red underlined]] instruments of cruel torture [[/red underlined]] guillotines, [[strikethrough]] ha [[/strikethrough]] gallows etc. used in the past, one cannot help thinking that after all the human race has made some progress.
[[X in left margin]] This evening invited for supper at the house of [[red underlined]] Sir Thomas Hudson Beare [[/red underlined]] (See Who's Who in Britain) Supposed to be a stag party because no ladies invited except his wife and daughter.  [[red underlined]] Born in Australia [[/red underlined]] and in the ideas the old gentleman [[red underlined]] looks wide awake [[/red underlined]].

We were only 8 invited,3 of them [[red underlined]] Nobel Prizes and one twice [[/red underlined]] Nobel P.
