[[underlined]] Oct. 24. [[/underlined]] Sunday - Bright sunny weather.  Feel entirely [[red underlined]] recovered [[/red underlined]] since a few days.  Sleep and appetite has come back.  My [[red underlined]] weight is now 172 lbs. [[/red underlined]]  Must avoid getting more.

Afternoon at 4 P.M. at [[red underlined]] La Maison Francaise [[/red underlined]] reunion where [[red underlined]] Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler received the highest order of [[/red underlined]] the French Republic, given to him by French Minister Plenipotentiary.  Met many friends in the overcrowded rooms.  [[red underlined]] Prof. Zanetti, J.F. Finch, Mr Maurice Leon, [[/red underlined]] Paris etc.  [[red underlined]] Butler [[/red underlined]] made offhand a most excellent speech on the present, past and future situation of World peace or war.  His voice sounded somewhat tired.  [[red underlined]] I fear his health is not of the best.  When he comes to die, there is no man existing who can be as able a successor. [[/red underlined]]

He built up Columbia to what Columbia has become today, grew up with her own growth to her present enormous development.  His death may prove a calamity for the future of Columbia University.

Evening went to dinner and Chandler lecture of [[red underlined]] Dr. Northrop, [[/red underlined]] Chandler medallist at Columbia University.
Dinner at 6.P.M. was at Faculty Club.  Sat next to [[red underlined]] Dr. Keppel of Rockefeller foundation. [[/red underlined]]  Talk about European University conditions and American donations etc.
Lecture room well filled.  [[red underlined]] Dean Pegram [[/red underlined]] presiding.  [[red underlined]] Northrop [[/red underlined]] was born in Yonkers and is [[red underlined]] grand'son of Havemeyer [[/red underlined]] who donated Havemeyer Hall.  His lecture on enzymes etc was given in too low a voice to be well understood.
[[underlined]] Oct 28. [[/underlined]]  At office.  Then evening at Cosmopolitan Club, where annual meeting of Institute of International Education. This morning the N.Y Times published on its editorial page a report of the Chandler medal meeting, [[strikethrough]] giving a full [[/strikethrough]] telling that [[red underlined]] Northrop is the 16th Chandler medalist [[/red underlined]] and giving a list of his predecessors, but [[left margin]] !! [[/left margin]] [[red underlined]] omitting my name, [[/red underlined]] altho' I was the [[red underlined]] first [[/red underlined]] to get the Chandler Medal (1914).
