Concannon head of chemical division of Department of Commerce - Washington came to see me, in regard of tomorrows Radio broadcast (W.A.B.C. Columbia broadcasting System), where they are to dramatise the invention of Bakelite. - Took him to University Club for luncheon. Tells me that he and his assistant Delahunty altho Republicans have hitherto been spared losing their jobs by the "New Deal" administration
[[underlined]] Dec. 7 [[/underlined]] Lectured at Columbia, 11.A.M. to the graduating class of Chemical engineers, on subject "The present field and opportunities of the Chemical Engineer. The classroom was filled to the limit by a group of intelligent looking young men of various ages who followed with much interest; also my colleagues, Professors D.D. Jackson, McKee, Morgan, Fink, etc. Then hasty luncheon at University Club, after which had to go to the broadcasting [[strikethrough]] station of [[/strikethrough]] studio of W.A.B.C. of the Chemical Division of the U.S. Bureau of Commerce, which has advertised a coast to coast Broadcast dramatising the inventions in Chemical Industry. This was my first visit to a broadcasting studio.  I was amazed at the precision and the delicate equipment of such a station.  The subject was relayed partly from Washington and covered various topics, such as the condemnation to the Guillotine of Lavoisier during the French revolution, the [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] invention of the method for making Aluminium and last an episode in the invention of Bakelite. A conversation supposed to be held by me to Thurlow some night in my laboratory when I explained to him, how I had [[strikethrough]] cors [[/strikethrough]] succeeded in mastering the complicated reaction for making Bakelite. - All these subjects were spoken by hired actors, who inpersonified me and Thurlow while I listened. My only participation at the request of Mr. Stellemus, was to express my thanks for the perfect way in which all this had been done (about 5 minutes). Afterwards Concannon and myself went to the University Club for a drink, before I returned to Yonkers.
