Letter by Air-mail from [[strikethrough]] Lebak [[/strikethrough]] [[underline]] Dr. Lebach [[/underline]] who with his wife have finally arrived in [[underline]] Cuba, [[/underline]] [[strikethrough]] he [[/strikethrough]] expelled as Jews from Germany. They are trying from there to get to New York on board of a German steamer. Then if they can reach England where a job is promised by Bakelite Ltd. Unless he finds employment at the Continental Diamond Fibre Co. where they use his "Saure-fest" system. Wrote him immediately by Air mail also an affidavit stating his abilities etc. so as to facilitate his landing in New York. Also wrote to Potter in England (See Correspondence) [[vertical note in left margin]] Union Carbide [[/vertical note in left margin]]
[[underline]] George, [[/underline]] this afternoon astonished me by [[underline]] having changed his preference [[/underline]] for combining with Union Carbide. Since Col. [[underline]] Pope [[/underline]] has further explained to him the more generous terms of Cyanamid, who seem very anxious to get our association and are willing to make any reasonable concessions. After I heard George I concluded that a combine with Cyanamid is decidedly more valuable for [[strikethrough]] and [[/strikethrough]] us, while leaving is considerable independence

Curiously enough, this same day, the President of [[underline]] Monsanto Co. [[/underline]] Queeny came to see George and Rossi to urge us [[underline]] to join Monsanto. [[/underline]] [[end page]]

I told George the time had arrived when we should inform [[underline]] Rossi about the Cyanamid situation and pledge him to secrecy, [[/underline]] and speak to nobody about it. As this might arouse restlessness.

I told him that none other but George and myself should know about it until the time came when we could afford to reveal and discuss the situation. He assured me of his secrecy. [[underline]] Oct 24. [[/underline]]
[[underline]] George [[/underline]] arrived this morning with even broader terms as explained to him by [[underline]] Col. Pope. - from Cyanamid [[/underline]]
[[underline]] Oct. 25 [[/underline]] This morning early I drove to [[underline]] Bloomfield. [[/underline]] Was amazed at the progress and changes for the better since my visit last year. Everything cleaned up and improved, additional outfit, and old units much increased. Old paper mill used to excellent advantage.

Everybody happy and busy in their work. In the afternoon addressed the group of chemists in our newly equipped library on future problems in plastics; pointing to some roads leading from inexperience raw materials into the production of newer plastics etc. Told them some of my personal experiences in younger years etc. A very inspiring day to me to see what excellent work had been done since last year's visit.
