Engineering Faculty of Columbia Comparing the record of the Chemical Engineering department with that of all the other engineering groups as to graduates present inscriptions, number of men who get their P.h.D. degree etc. Showing overwhelming record of the Chemists over every other engineering department. Also his honorary degrees etc etc.
So I sent a [[underlined]] telegram to Dr Butler [[/underlined]] worded as follows:
"Dangerous situation has arisen
"in engineering department.
"Would rush to New York to
"explain but for advise of my
"physician as I cannot stand
"cold climate. Therefore am
"writing you a letter on contro-
"versy between chemical and
"other engineering departments so that
"it may be taken in considera-
"tion before a hurried decision
"which may cause damage to
"Columbia". L.H.B.

Barker again here reviewing our conferences and discussing situation. Advised him to arrange retreat of Dr. Mc.Kee in such a way that it saves his face and does not involve criticism of Columbia U. Expressed myself very decidedly as to the necessity of keeping such an excellent man as [[underlined]] Hixson [[/underlined]] also [[underlined]] Dr. Morgan [[/underlined]] and to ease the departure of Dr. [[space]]
Furthermore expressed my belief that [[underlined]] Hixson is best fitted [[/underlined]] to be put on the head of our Chemical engineering department and gave him my reasons.
We agree in all this.
Went for luncheon at the Casita near the theatre in Coconut Grove very neat place, patronised by nice people.
Evening Andrew took Barker to his hotel whence he leaves per Aircraft for New York to discuss further with his board
