Mailed check of $5.00 to Science Newsletter for 1 year subscription to be mailed to George in India.  Afternoon went to Mr. Grenade at his house, where I met a Belgian who visits the U.S in relation to moving pictures. X [[left margin]] X Knows the Voortman's.  His name is Rene G. [[underlined]] Aug 21 [[/underlined]]  Very foggy and sultry  Celine sends me a long letter from Dickie, typewritten, in which she tells of her trip and gives her opinion of the different countries they visited with their car.  Rather critical of France and more particularly of Paris.  Admiration for Switzerland and the Swiss - Much against the

Italians etc.  Praise about German Roads etc. - As yet no news from George in England.  England got her lesson by trying to associate with tricky Russia.  Today newspapers publish the fact that Russia in the meantime has made a pact with Germany, reciprocating by sending each other goods, of which there was a shortage in each of the contracting countries.  Wrote letter to Boonroy.
[[underlined]] Aug 22 [[/underlined]]  Union Carbide will hold meeting Aug 28.  After that our stockholders will meet 18 or 25 September.
Germany has made a treaty with Russia! - What next and how stupid of England having courted Russia! - Big war news.  Stock of Union Carbide has dropped to lower level. - Some of our common stockholders may object to our agreement on this account.  George and his wife motoring in England and perhaps the continent
