Felt pain in my back so went to Dr. Betts who advised me to wear a double front truss. Says I have two ruptures, altho' the left one is small. - Also recommends an electrically heated pat for my back. - Thinks my back ache was due either to my truss or to catching cold in my back. So went to New York So drove to New York where a spinal double truss was made for me by [[space]] 42d street. Price $30.00 + 40 cents tax.
Also bought an electric heating pat for my back ache in case I need it. - Found it in Yonkers cost only $3.00
[[underlined]] Aug 30 [[/underlined]] The news of our consolidation with Union Carbide has appeared in all the papers this morning.

ago and George is now in Scotland, hunting growse No news from Dickie and her husband. - War tension in Europe aggravated. - Difficulty for travelling and finding accommodation in steamers A German ship the Bremen? was forbidden to leave New York port and was searched for contraband of war and left without passengers for Germany after 2 days delay. Same complication with other foreign steamers here and in Europe. - Most people I meet believe there will be no war and Hittler will weaken. I am sorry to think differently and that war is approaching.
Went to office, then to University Club. About 25 years ago, I left for Japan and when I arrived there I learned that the Great War had broken out in Europe. Will this be a repetition 25 years later.
am told that [[underlined]] Union Carbide on Sept 8, will amend [[/underlined]] our Charter and that on Sept 18 or 25 the Stockholders of Bakelite will be invited to ratify the consolidation
There will be a board meeting the same day
Shall be glad when it is all over.
