[[underline]] Sept 25. [[/underline]] Worried at having no further news from Hessert and Dicky. In my notebook of 1932 I find that at that time we were arranging so as to combine with Union Carbide but the market was so unsteady and U.C. stock dropped to 17, so all negotiations were stopped. At office. Further bad news from the war in Europe 
[[underline]] Sept 26. [[/underline]] Went to office, then to Fair for a few hours studying the Motor car exhibits - Admirable! 
[[underline]] Sept 27 [[/underline]] Columbia University opening. But it rained so much that I did not join the procession. Had a talk with Hixson who now is replacing, [[blank space]]
Had luncheon together with Hixson McKee. Also Zanette who has entirely recovered from his illness. Infection of the leg. He had a very unpleasant experience in taking Sulfo-pyridin, which stopped his heart. So they had to abandon that drug.

taking parts of Poland. 
[[underline]] Sept. 29 [[/underline]] Today is the day of final ratifications of our deal [[strikethrough]] wit [[/strikethrough]] and union with Union Carbide Co. I presided the meeting. Only a few stockholders outside directors of Bakelite were present. - There was not the slightest discussion and the whole contract was adopted as proposed. The meeting started at 11 A.M and was over at 12.

George arrived this evening at Hoboken and Dick brought him his motor car, which enabled George to reach his home in Southport this same evening. 
[[underline]] Sept 30 [[/underline]] = Sunday. This morning had a long conversation with George over the phone. - He does not know where the Hesserts are at present. He tells me that our friends of Bakelite Ltd were unanimous in adopting our merger with Union Carbide. [[strikethrough]] Th [[/strikethrough]] His steamer "New Amsterdam" was only partly filled and they had an excellent room. - George appeared very cheerful. Celine this morning early left for  the camp in the Adirondacks with Dick, to select a successor for her present caretaker who has become a hopeless drunkard.
