[[underline]] May 1. [[/underline]] Celine went to New York so I had a quiet day undisturbed by visits or telephone calls.

Further [[red underline]] bad news from the war in Europe [[/red underline]] 
Wrote a letter to [[red and black underline]] Dr. Allen [[/red and black underline]] of the [[red underline]] Franklin Institute [[/red underline]] telling him intend to reduce my address to less than 15 minutes or even 7 minutes. Celine tells me provisions have been made for our members of family in train and Philadelphia Hotel. Celine and myself will have separate rooms which will simplify matters. Feel rather nervous and spent day in rewriting my address which I want to submit to George before I mail it to [[red underline]] Philadelphia [[/red underline]]

Celine [[red underline]] George and Brooks [[/red underline]] will travel together in the train. [[underline]] May 2. [[/underline]] Busy all day unpacking my trunks from Florida and trying to put things in shape. 
[[underline]] May 3. [[/underline]] Went to New York office. Made [[red underline]] typewritten copies of my address [[/red underline]] to which I made some slight alterations. - Then sent it to Dr. Allen in Philadelphia.

Evening had the unexpected visit of [[red underline]] Hessert, Brooksie and
Dickie [[/red underline]] for supper. - A [[red underline]] lively cheerful group, Brooksie leading. [[/red underline]] - Very cheerful and full of tricks together. A real pleasure to see them now grown up and remembering

[[/bold red underline]] Was happy to hear from George that he and several of our men are to be given increased responsibility. That [[red underline]] Blunt will probably replace Brown and that [[red underline]] Sanford [[double red underline]] Brown [[double red underline]] is considered as not necessary. [[/red underline]]

[[underline]] Saturday [[/underline]] May 4. - Went to office to write further letter to Dr. Allen 
^[[of Franklin Institute]] telling him can deliver my talk in 7 minutes, and later on at the dinner speak about some of my experiences. [[strikethrough]] Went to University [[/strikethrough]]

Have to try it on finally at 2 P.M. Tuesday. Went to University Club. Had a long interesting talk of the famous lawyer now retired; [[strikethrough]] who [[/strikethrough]] [[blank space]] who related me some of his experiences at the bar.

Beautiful weather but [[red underline]] bad news from Europe - the British losing considerably and  Italy [[/red underline]] seeming to [[strikethrough]] profess [[/strikethrough]] [[red underline]] join the Nazi interests. [[/red underline]] Celine went for dinner at George's house in Connecticut. While I am putting my notes in order. - [[strikethrough]] 75 [[/strikethrough]] 72°F in the house.
