Celine went out with George and his wife in his new sailboat. [[strikethrough]] Thus [[/strikethrough]] and are very successful.  This is the result of the many improvements which have done away the pollution of the Hudson.
[[underline]] May 6  [[/underline]] Was called at phone. by the
lady assistant of [[red underline]] Mr. Berney [[/red underline]] (?)
a painter whose studio is at 54 East 57 ^[[street]] [[red underline]] who desires to paint my portrait. [[/red underline]] Told them am very busy now and next week. - Says portrait will be painted [[red underline]] at no cost for me. [[/red underline]]  - I wonder what next? It is now about 10 days since I left peaceful Anchorage.
[[underline]] May 7. [[/underline]] Went to New York and met

Long talk with George at the office as to present and future of Bakelite and Union Carbide. - [[red underline]] George seems more cheerful and pleased with our new partners. [[/red underline]] - They want to transfer our offices to some vacant rooms which they now have at headquarters of U.C. in 42d street and [[red underline]] have
planned to reserve me there [[/red underline]] a room to myself, which I can use

whenever I am in New York This pleases me much. Went to John David's store to try a new evening suit for next weeks. medal ceremonies, at [[strikethrough]] Phila [[/strikethrough]] Franklin Institute. 
[[underline]] May 8. [[/underline]] George recommended me to take [[red underline]] Vitamin B [[/red underline]] wafers which
are sold by the Cerevim Products Corporation 100 sixth Ave. New York
To take 3 tablets during 24 hours. It is claimed to be an anti-neuritic
Vitamin. 
May 9. The Chicago section of the [[red underline]] American Chemical Society [[/red underline]] invited me to be their guest on November 24. to be present at the award of the [[red underline]] Willard Gibbs Medal [[/red underline]]  to Dr. Vladimir N. Tpatieff for his work in chemistry. [[vertical note in left margin in red]] Am. Chemical Soc. [[/vertical note in left margin in red]] - I [[red underline]] was
the first recipient of that medal many years ago. [[/red underline]] - Wrote them my thanks but unable to go there on account of prior engagements 
[[underline]] May 10. [[/underline]] The [[red underline]] Germans [[/red underline]] have invaded [[red underline]] Belgium [[/red underline]] and [[red underline]] Netherland yesterday. [[/red underline]] using air planes and dropping parachutes in Brussels and Amsterdam also bombs and trying to destroy all air- fields. Active fighting has begun. - [[red underline]] Poor Belgium [[/red underline]] and [[red underline]] poor [[strikethrough]] King a [[/strikethrough]] [[red underline]] young King [[/red underline]] after so many sad happenings.
[[underline]] May 11. [[/underline]] A beautiful quiet day, Went walking early up main Highway in Yonkers, along the large estate
of [[red underline]] Sam Untermeyer, who died recently [[/red underline]] and whose property is now for sale full of beautiful blooming trees and
