[[vertical note in left margin in red]] King Leopold abdicates [[/vertical note in left margin in red]]
This made a [[red underline]] profound sensation. - Poor Boy has suffered so much in his life [[/red underline]] since so many adverse happenings in the royal family. Former war while he was a young man, then the loss of his distinguished father, by a fall from a rock. Then the death of his wife from Swedish aristocracy, then this bitter present war, and killing so many innocents. His whole family was of German extraction, King Leopold I, being the first King of Belgium of that line - after he had brought about the separation of Belgium & Holland. Then [[strikethrough]] Lep [[/strikethrough]] Leopold II, who developed the Congo, and gave a low private life with his mistresses. Then, his father King Albert, a man of distinguished life and high aims. - What a tragedy. - The Allies are furious while the Germans are jubilant. What next? - Meantime the [[red underline]] war in Flanders goes [[/red underline]] on, and the [[red underline]] Germans seem to come nearer [[/red underline]] to their aim of demolishing Great Britain, while the Irish are eager to help them.
