[[vertical note in left margin in red]] France surrender [[/vertical note in left margin in red]] = This morning on arriving at our office I found New York full of excitement since the newspapers on their front had printed in large letters: [[red underline]] French give up; [[/red underline]]
"British fight goes on", and "Future of French fleet and [[red underline]] B.E.F. worries London". [[/red underline]] There was a general depression on this news, which later on got corrected by [[red underline]] Britain [[/red underline]] and further bulletins. Situation is [[red underline]] grave [[/red underline]] enough but not so extreme as the bulletins seemed to make it.
[[vertical note in left margin in red]] Brooksie [[/vertical note in left margin in red]]
At the office found [[red underline]] Brooksie Baekeland [[/red underline]] with his father. He certainly is a [[red underline]] handsome and intelligent boy. [[/red underline]] - I hope George will not be unnecessarily severe on him, on such small matters as for instance his rather careless clothes and not using hats nor caps.
This evening long distance phone gave us several interesting [[red underline]] British talks, reassuring us that situation is not so grave as the papers made it. [[/red underline]] - But that the battle goes on and will go on until the Nazis make acceptable terms. - They also told that [[red underline]] even if France withdrew Britain would carry on the fight. Petain says he has asked terms. [[/red underline]]

Here again I was impressed with the [[red underline]] orderly way [[/red underline]] young school boys and girls were behaving and their interest in the subjects.
[[vertical note in left margin in red]] Art Museum [[/vertical note in left margin in red]]
The whole [[red underline]] administration [[/red underline]] of the museum is [[red underline]] admirably [[/red underline]] done. - [[strikethrough]] Was [[/strikethrough]] I was much interested in the valuable collection of old armour and weapons donated by my dear departed friend [[red underline]] George Stone; [[/red underline]] who was the head chemist of the New Jersey Zinc Co.
On leaving the [[red underline]] Museum [[/red underline]] along Fifth Ave to the University Club, was again impressed by the [[red underline]] cheerful little children in Central Park and the
endless arrangements for [[/red underline]] visitors young and old, and how well the park is kept in all its details. A sight which impressed me so much when [[red underline]] 51 years ago I came to live here. [[/red underline]]

Bad news from [[red underline]] France [[/red underline]] which is about to [[red underline]] capitulate against the combination of Nazis and Mussolini. Celine [[/red underline]] tells me [[red underline]] George has again pains in his lower vertebra. [[/red underline]]
[[underline]] June 19. [[/underline]] Went to office to see [[red underline]] George, [[/red underline]] to inquire further about his pains. But he seems better, and hopes that a specialist will cure him.
[[vertical note in left margin in red]] Germany gaining [[/vertical note in left margin in red]]
Notwithstanding capitulation, [[red underline]] fighting in France is still going on. - Paris has been bombed [[/red underline]] and other destruction is going on. [[red underline]] Germany is gaining on almost all [[strikethrough]] points [[/strikethrough]] fronts, while the Italians are bombing [[/red underline]] in the Mediteranian [[strikethrough]] to [[/strikethrough]] and North Africa.
Went to Columbia to deliver that
