On arriving home am confronted with a telegram; the text of which made me shudder:
"Bonbon arrived safely and
"is now at Harkness Pavilion
"(at Columbia University)
"She feels better this afternoon
"and is having proper medical
"care. - No definite diagnosis
"has been made yet but the
"Doctor thinks it is a bladder
"and kidney infection.
"We will keep you posted.
"Love and best wishes - Nina.
After coming home this afternoon from Matheson's Island. All this is sad shocking news. I hope I may hear better next. Slept poorly after this news.

After a sleepless night. Got up early and sent telegrams to Yonkers to get further information about Celine. - Feel very downcast. - Fortunately got a telegram in answer: "Bonbon better this evening (yesterday) reading as follows:
"Bonbon" better this evening reacting well to treatment. No critical danger. Pathological test will be reported to morrow. Signed: Nina and Phil.
Just about the time this telegram reached me, had the visit of Dr & Mrs. Fairchild. - Dr. Fairchild tells me that while he was in the Phillipines during his exploration, Mrs. F. got the same illness, but after some weeks patience, recovered entirely her health. - all this is more cheerful news.
