him who I was and gave him to read one of the sheets in which my history and present connections were clearly explained. Could not even get 10 cents from him to buy some bread. But no avail. - He invited me to get with him to try the round underground train which circles around New York, Perth Amboy etc. and Philadelphia. By this time it was daylight. I could see the parts of New Jersey where I had been active in the past, in my younger years in various enterprises. But no use! and felt more hungry than ever before. Afternoon drove to the hospital of Columbia University where Celine is now recuperating. She is now recovering there but has still to stay a few more days. - Also met many friends who were visiting. Mean time, I felt much played out and had an unpleasant night.
At Snug Rock felt somewhat of a stranger since the building of the "Crags" has been torn down and is now replaced by a green lawn giving a beautiful view on the Hudson. It is a very hot day, 85°.
Had a restless sleep, pain in my back and bewildered in my surroundings, while putting my things in shape. While at this work had the cheerful visit of George, who tells me that Celine is rapidly improving and that in a few days she can leave the hospital. Nor has she any gall bladders or similar infections and according to her physicians has nothing much to be worried about.
