Further bad news about the war in Russia.

A certain Mr. C. H. Awret who claims to have been a pupil of Frederic Swarts and has been residing in China, came to see me to find a  position in the U.S. instead of returning to Belgium. He is a civil 
[[left margin vertical]] Says he had twelve years experience in Belgium, before going to China [[/left margin vertical]]
engineer speeks french but mediocre English. Claims he was [[strike through]] councilor [[/strike through]] technical councilor to the Government of China. Was sent to me by Count Pontoz van der Straten

Belgian representative in Washington. Took Awret for luncheon to the University Club; but told him I [[strike through]] kn [[/strike through]] know of no position here where his experience could be utilised.
