May 15 (cont) were made twice. Once standing in a secondary cut thru the ten foot thistle bunch and country birds crossing line of vision This count gave 140 for one minute.

Another count using the ditch as a sight line gave 189 to one minute[.]

The third in the east fly line using a car window as sighting apparatus and counting only birds entering a colony visible from side window from opposite seat gave 160 to minute.

One & 1/2 miles away 21 birds crossed the road [[insertion]] ahead [[/insertion] all bound for the colony during time we were driving one half mile.  Birds were feeding  over a wide radius and territory about nests was dotted with groups of fledglings

In afternoon to Awahnee to speak on general Biological Survey works to about 50 farmers. Saw acres of Calochortus [[underlined]] venustus [[/underlined]]& [[underlined]] clavutus [[/underlined]],[[underlined]]  Brodiaea lutea [[/underlined]] & a yellow one similar to [[hordensium?]] [[underlined]] a Rusticana[[/underlined]] much like Heterophyllus & various other plants - arrived at Fresno at 930 PM after a wonderful chicken dinner at home. Nils Avergaard, near Madero. accompanied to meeting by Avergaard & [[Mankband?]] to a Comm. of Madero County. Coming out of [[oak Forthhills?]] counted 18 doves flying across the road in 20 miles. In broken grass country between farms & [[ hunter belt?]] horned larks were as plentiful as I have ever seen.
