May 4, 1933 temperature & swelling back of the ears. We called the Doctor & immediately took her to the hospital. He lanced the ear but said after he failed to secure much pus that he might have to go perform [[overstrike]] her [[/overstrike]] a mastoid operation. At home at midnight. May 5, 1933 Grace Gail much worse this morning and the Doctor operated immediately. A most anxious day which I spent largely at the hospital with Clara. Grace Gail did not come out of the anesthetic until mid afternoon. Saw Carl [[Steiner?]] for a few minutes and stayed with Grace Gail until train time. Took the Rose to Pocatello. May 6, 1933 Arrived Pocatello 620 PM after riding all day thru eastern Oregon & southern Idaho. Lots of geese—ducks & mergansers along Snake. Saw many of the men at Pocatello. May 7, 1933. Young & Crouch arrived this A.M. Conference with Crouch about Emergency Forestry Program. May 8, 1933 Continued conference with Rutledge & Standing of Forest Service present. Discussed financial matter by regions this afternoon. To dinner & dance in evening. May 9, 1933. Left 1010 AM and meet Ben Dorris on train. He gave us veterans side of this mess at Washington.
