May 6, 1934 Arranged for horses & got Ignor Olsen to pack us to the 12 mile house in the North Fork of the Quinault arrived there at 600 PM. [[underline]] Townsend Warblers, golden Rillivalated Warblers & Cassius Vireos [[/underline]] all the way. Also [[underline]] Ravens [[/underline]] with curious gutteral voices quite unlike those east of the mountains. In camp tonight a pair of owls called continually. The notes were louder & longer than those of the horned owl & gives whoo-whoo.-----whoo. always with a long pause between the second & third notes. We finally decided that it must be a pair of [[underline]] spotted owls [[/underline]]. Fine camp fire visit with Muriel. May 7, 1934 Raining cats & dogs & me with blisters on my feet glad to take it easy. Fixed up camp-washed dishes built a lean too over the stove. [[Muric?]] took a hike up the trail & Leo poked about in the brush near camp. I wrote all morning-alternately warming my fingers & writing until they became too stiff. Leo came back all excited saying that he had found a number of elk beds--lots of fresh trails & the [[underline]] owl nest [[/underline]] [[Morie?]] returned with reports of elk above camp a short way & after lunch he & Leo took my gun & went up the hill to look at the nest. They failed to relocate it but did come back with a beautiful pair of [[underline]] spotted owls [[/underline]] for me. Making it a red letter day indeed as they were the first I have ever handled.
