state forest. Cutting to release planted pine heavy on perhaps 1000 acres pine planted 1917 and has made very poor growth. Plantation two thick some not over 3x3. Possibly too much emphasis on white pine & conifers altho easier to raise & transplant.
Cutting along roadsides very severe in some places excessive. Later cutting much more moderate. Evidence of attempt to spare Cornus, Crataegus & Amelanchier. Lots of sprouts around oak stumps & noticable amt of deer brousing. Rainy or foggy & visability poor. General stand white oak & white pine - with some cherry some yellow birch etc intermingled also some aspen
Saw 11 deer in forest and 10 along highway between there & Renova. also 3 grouse & 2 gray squirrels arrived at Renova with broken heater hose & a loose knee action joint at 700 PM. Wrote letters & notes in evening.

Left Renova in A.M with an assistant Trey & visited an improvement thinning & roadside improvement project 7 mi east of Renova. Stand here largely 50-60 year old yellow birch, beech maple, basswood, black cherry & butternut. Some Viburnum & witchhazel along creeks & a good stand of Rubus & sambucus along creeks & roads in open spots. Improvement cutting almost entirely of removal of dead & deformed trees & old logs. Works much more intensive than anything seen in national forests to
