Local reports of a few ducks nesting at beaver ponds & a few flocks stopping elevation about 1700 feet. Good opportunity to create a pond of 50 acres or more with cheap earth dams. Advised to ascertain water flow & size of acreage. Should be able to grow good duck foods here. Gross says there are several more such ponds possible.
Saw a Marsh hawk & three Jacksnipe at this place.
Two plantings of pine & spruce (one right here) entirely ruined by deer. Browse fully utilized. Deer population has been exceedingly heavy on the open grass area & no hope of planting being successful exists here as long as deer are so abundant. Money wasted in plantings to date. Droppings looked like rabbit concentration areas in west. From here went to Owls Nest where a double enclosure of deer proof & rabbit proof fence (the latter 2 acres inside a 5 acre deer enclosure. Intend to plant 10 acres including these areas to pine & spruce to determine extent of growth when protected from deer alone & from both deer & rabbits. It will pay us to have a close check on this area for we also can learn something. These areas have produced wonderful white pine in the past judging from the number & size of remaining stumps. From here we started back to Warren & stopped to see a clearing of small maples where crop trees spaced 17 x 17 have been selected and crown released leaving all other stuff as trainers from the crop
