Left Mill Village at 7:00 AM and drove to Pittesfield Mass. where we met Mr. York State conservation Commissioner and Russel Smith who has a temporary wild life appointment. Went to Beartown area & went over it. Open forest of birch beech & maple. A little red oak & a scattering of hundreds & white pine. The camp area selected is naturally good. Open growth of birch mostly gray and red maple. Blueberries an[[?]], Raspberry everywhere. Saw one grouse. Development plans most indecisive and question the value of a lot of it. Several [[strikethrough]] April [[/strikethrough]] ponds on or near area. Drove to Hartford for night stopping enroute to look at a possible duck development. Arrived at Hartford at 8:00 PM.

Left Hartford at 9:00 AM. in company of Mr. Harnes State Forester, Mr Clarke State game commissioner and Dr. Dulkea visited several state forests & saw timber stand improvement works. No harm to wild life and would only suggest opening more in spots. Little berry bearing stuff. Saw several plantations of barberry, Lonicera etc for birds. All well placed & accessible to [[?]] also small. Thinks it doubtful that food is a existing factor for grouse in this country. Certainly plenty on 5 - 20 acres to support a grouse in competition with almost anything else. Also saw ducks nearing ponds where they have a lot of black ducks hoping they will breed. Rather question it under their conditions
