May 7, 1935 Snails, crabs & other duck foods gone in drained areas. On one county line the drainage had taken place while just across the line it had not. The contrast was startling. A struggling growth of high tide beach was in evidence on the drained areas while the undrained were fine meadows Look over beach and along road saw my first [[underlined]] Piping plover [[/underlined]] two of which we secured. Arrived at Patchogue in evening. [[underlined]] Cormorants [[/underlined]] flying up coast in big flocks. May 8, 1935. In morning visited CCC. Camps on Camp Upton where 800 men are working. Found one game camp & three forest camps. Met by Bump & Hoar. Look over plans & area. Think too elaborate for any justification of economies forestry work worst of the two. Bump planting too much [[feed?]] but it is a good experiment. Then to Shinnecock bay to look over all grass situation. and then into N.Y arriving at midnight. Saw my first [[underlined]] Gannets [[/underlined]] over water. Saw plenty of drainage projects here and results of all are the same as above. May 9, 1935 Left East Orange at 8:30 AM & drove down Jersey coast looking over general drainage areas. Went to meet Settlemen's who took us to undrained ponds. This contained an abundance of [[strikethrough]] nude [[/strikethrough]] fish & no mosquitos. Thinks if these could be left it would be favorable to ducks. Stagnant pools filled with mosquito larvae. Then met a Mr. Cloaking at Palermo who was very decided in his opinions
