Oct 31, 1935: Worked a little more on Game Mgt. Bulletin and to Dr. Bressman's office for a conference with Richards of resettlement. Came back. Mr. Darling called me at 11:30 & asked me to come to his office. Met me in the Hall and said get your coat we are due in the Secretary's office in 15 minutes. I did and met him again in the hall to get the biggest shock of my life. I asked what the row was about this time and he replied we are making a change in the executive head of the survey & your it. I was so dizzy I couldn't say anything and he went on to explain that it was Doctors orders that his heart was bad & that he had to quit. The Secretary was exceedingly kind & so was everyone else over there. Came back & Eisenhower came in to congratulate me and arrange for a picture. He came near letting the cat out of the bag. Miss Broadwater & Dr. Bell both curious as to reason for long conference. Stalled them off. Am more sorry than glad. I hate to see Mr. Darling go. He has been wonder for the Bureau and has captivated the public imagination to a wonderful extent. I will have a hard job to half fill his shoes. Any previous chief would have been an easier man to follow.
