Feb 3, 1938 (cont)
Investigated the rather ingenious hog traps in which the army had caught some 60 of the wild hogs on the island.  Also looked at beach erosion control area & works.  Seemed to be going very slow.  In afternoon took boat & went to Cape Island & climbed lighthouse and saw lots of [[underline]] mergansers, buffleheads, scaups [[/underline]] etc. and counted [[underline]] 81 oyster catchers [[/underline]] along canal banks.  Back to Bulls Island for the night.

To Bull's Island 8:00AM.  Stop at McClellanville to see building & then by steady driving we reached Swan Quarter in time to see the quarters etc.  Saw the Supt and went on to Mattamuskeet arriving at about 7:00PM.
Feb 5, 1938
Up & over the dikes to see some birds caught a pickerel in one of the canals and saw lots of birds.  [[Fehner?]], Merrill, Stockade, & Terhune arrived at noon.  Took them out to see birds & all very enthused.  Inspected compound spent evening around hotel.  Boys finished check and Laurencetold one that it showed 12,000 swan and 55,000 geese.

Out west dike & saw lots more birds - east dike still more.  Left at 11:00AM & Terhune, [[Dehull?]] & I
