May 28, 1938 cont easement project. The cabin is neat but small as is garage. Sits on a nice point overlooking the lake. This had a big population of [[underline]] Scaup, redheads, canvasback and Ruddy ducks. [[\underline]] Also saw one [[underline]] Bufflehead [[\underline]] and number of [[underline]] puddle ducks. [[\underline]] The wind was blowing a gale & couldn't see as well as we might have. All three projects had a huge population of [[underline]] black terns [[\underline]] skimming their surface. Saw also three [[underline]] sanderlings [[\underline]] on the big dam at Lake Ilo. Then into Bismark[[sic]] for the night. May 29, 1938. Left Bismarck at 8.30 to Long Lake. This is a beautiful area and fairly populated with ducks. Saw the brood of [[underline]] young pintails, [[\underline]] great numbers of [[underline]] Blue winged teal, mallards, pintails, gadwall [[\underline]] and a nice population of [[underline]] scaup, redheads, canvasback, buddies [[\underline]] etc. Also saw one pair [[underline]] green winged teal. [[\underline]] Lots of [[underline]] black terns, Franklin Gulls, [[\underline]] and some [[underline]] Forsters terns. [[\underline]] Great flocks of [[underline]] small shore birds. [[\underline]] This is an outstanding area and I only wish it were possible to restore the entire 17000 acres of this old lake bottom. Test well for artesian water just going down & don't know what the possibilities are. Met Ray Back who seems to be an enthusiastic sort of lad. Back to Bismark to a lovely dinner at Steens and then started north. Burnie and I stopped to see Lake Yanktonay
