May 29, 1938 cont.
  It is small & deep.  No fences yet & no birds.  Good nest area in flights.  Needs some development work.  Then on to Upper Souris.  Looked at the two units below dam at at the big lake itself.  The two lower units are remarkable areas full of birds & beauties to look at.  Water circulates freely.  Roy Dougal seems to be a good hard working boy & one of the kind we need.
[[underline]] Mallards [[\underline]] & [[underline]] Pintails [[\underline]] still feeding on the old corn crop of last year even tho the wheat is up 4 inches.  Saw one [[underline]] Upland Plover [[\underline]] here.  Lots of [[underline]] Phalaropes & semipalmated sandpipers. [[\underline]]  One flock of [[underline]] White rumped Sandpipers, 1 Yellowlegs - godwits & [[willetts?]].  [[\underline]]  Ducks of all kinds very plentiful.  Saw [[underline]] 10 cormorants [[\underline]] in a tree & a flock of [[underline]] pelicans [[\underline]] on one area.  Also one pair [[underline]] green winged teal. [[\underline]]  Back to Minot for dinner.

May 30, 1938
  Left Minot at 7.00AM.  Drove to Des Lacs.  Saw a [[underline]] lot [[\underline]] of [[underline]] canvasback [[\underline]] & [[underline]] redheads [[\underline]] also [[underline]] ruddies. [[\underline]]  Three broods of [[underline]] pintails [[\underline]] containing 6 - 7 - 7 young each.  Steen killed a skunk on the project.  Saw lots of [[underline]] Clay colored sparrows [[\underline]] & one I'm sure was a [[underline]] Bairds sparrow. [[\underline]]  Lots of [[underline]] Ruddies [[\underline]] on lake and saw 6-8 [[underline]] Northern Phalaropes [[\underline]] in high plumage.  Saw a lot of [[underline]] eared [[\underline]], one [[underline]] horned & two pied billed grebes [[\underline]] from the same spot.  I had a very enjoyable time watching
