June 3, 1938. Left Prairie du Chien at 9.00AM & traveled to Peoria Ill stopping at Rock Island to see Vernon Haglin newsman who was a good friend of George Tonkins. Met Dirksen & others who took me to the meeting. I met 200 fellows & gave them a talk. Afterwards met a committee of fellows who presented petitions with several thousand signatures on them asking for the abandonment of the Chatauqua Refuge. I explained that such an abandonment was impossible but that we wanted to make it of the greatest public use consistent with the purpose of the refuge. They really want a little more fishing privilege than they have now. June 4 1938 Left at 7.00AM with Dirksen & an at Chicago 9.40AM. Called several men and found them all out. Left Chicago 3.15PM in Penn. and arrived at Newark at 9.30AM next Day. June 5, 1938 Guy met me & we went to see Clara June & several of his friends before returning to Bernardsville. His house is nearly completed and is a gorgeous place. Far too grand to live in. Workmanship is excellent and floors particularly beautiful. In afternoon shot a little skeet with Guy & Wallen Burnnhanger[[?]]. Not so good at it but neither were they. June 6, 1938 Went to Newark & bot present for C.J. also her graduation flowers.
