[] Oct 17th []
Weather continues warm & clear. The Behrings Strts Exp. has arrived here but I have not seen their collections.
[] Fish [] Dr Ayres considers the [[underline]] fish[[\underline]] of Cape Flattery almost exactly the same as those here as far as he has seen them.
[] Pyroceph Rubinus [] A speciman of the Pyroceph. rubin. was killed lately near here. [] Ortyges [] The Common Crested Quail is found abundant here & the Mountain Quail is but rarely seen. Scarcely any of the Oregon birds but are found here & many besides.

[] 19th []
Yesterday came up the Bay to Santa Clara.
[] 50 mi [] The day was misty so that I could see little of the shores.
[] Birds [] Today rode & walked about the village & noticed some new birds as per Append. These seem to have come south by an interior route as I noticed none at S.W. Bay & some doubtless go beyond there.
[] Fring. [[?orn]] [] The yellow crowned sparrow sings now a few faint but sweet notes. Great flocks of blackbirds, grackles, turkey buzzards, crows, geese & ducks are flying about.
[] Migration westwards [] Most of the migrating birds have probably bred in the mountains & therefore journey in the spring & fall east & west instead of north & south.

Santa Clara Cal'ia

[] Oct 20th []
This morning there was a thick fog which cleared up at 10 but clouds hung on the hills all day. Rode out about four miles to the border of the oak forests.
[] Lepus Calif. [] Noticed several species of birds & a hare there but it was too late & warm to get any specimens.
[] Artesian wells [] The Artesian wells dug here reach water at 80 to 50 ft - & there is generally a strong flow from them. One at 100 ft cut through a solid Redwood log & from another chips & [[?dower]] were thrown up. One at San Jose burst up as strong as to [[?force]] away & undermine the earth for a large extent.

[] 23rd []
Yesterday was very warm. Therm. at 90°
[] Lannis [[?Ludrs.]] [] Walked out early & shot a Shrike but the gun was so dirty I had to return soon.
Today went out again & shot several species of birds.
[] [[?Ictim.]] plumb [] The Kite has habits of flying & prancing on its prey like the Meadow hawk but flies higher. Its cry is a loud whistling note mostly when approached.
[] B. [[?livi]] [] The buzzard [[?shot]] cries like the Red-tail. One I saw seemed to resemble the R. Swainsonii
[] Musci. capa. Saya? [] Noticed in the evening a flycatcher in the garden opposite pursuing its prey high in the air darting & turning about like a swallow & then carrying the beetle to a branch to pick it to pieces. It seemed to be the M. Saya.
