[] Oct 24th []
Went out this morning with a gun for several hours & shot two specimens.
[] Pipilo Sneamsenii [] The Pipilo is less a ground bird than the other species & frequents the evergreen Oaks hiding in the thick branches. The only notes it now utters are single harsh low calls. It seems quarrelsome towards its own & other species of birds.
[] Turdus notulatus [] The thrush is now frequently nesting the willow thickets where it skulks about like the Hermit, & makes a low gutteral cry of complaint like the T. noevius. The whole morning was foggy & cool till about 12 o'clock.

[] 25th []
[] Parus inornatus v. p 71. [] The Parus I got today is the only one I have seen. It frequents the willows along the road & on seeing me made a harsh noise like a wren.
[] Buteo Pennsyl? [] I have seen lately a hawk which looks & flies like an owl, but has the loud scream & high sailing habits of the Winter hawk. Its back seems gray, breast, reddish and the under part of wings white showing a large dark spot in flying. A pair keep about the town & often fly up together circling & sailing high up chasing each other in various turns. The wings are short & broad.
Morning much like yesterday but the fog cleared up earlier and the whole day was warmer.

Walked out on the 26th to try & get the hawk above mentioned but without success. They were too wild to get a shot at. This morning left Santa Clara and came here.
[] Pica N. Garrulus Calif. [] Noticed on the way the Magpie, Calif. Jay & some other birds new to me. The valley towards the hills is covered by groves of the Evergreen & white oak & some shrubs now too rugged to determine.
[] Procyon [] Saw at Alviso a raccoon which seems exactly like the Eastern except having shorter fins & a lighter tail.
[] Ortyx [] Also a pair of Cal. Quails in a cage which have this year laid 80 eggs. Hatching was not attempted.
[] 29th []
Walked out this morning & shot three new specimens.
[] Geoco'x [] The Geococcyx is common & has somewhat the habits of Colaptes on the ground but runs much faster. It uses its bill like a rake scratching towards itself. I did not hear any cries.
[] Melan scalaxn [] The Melanerpes is not very abundant. I saw two, having much the manners of the putescens but its cry different. The Jay is abundant here & though more like G.[[?e'sistalus]] than G. Stelleri its cries are more different. It has the usual flight and habits of feeding. Noticed P. inornatus abundant in the oaks, making the usual Chickadee note in an unusual tone. Day mostly cloudy & quite cool.
