In addition to sports, MacDonald is an eager participant in many charitable organizations. He is a member of the Board of Trustees at St. Francis Hospital; a founder-member at Miami's Mt. Sinai Hospital; a member of the Board of Trustees at Miami Heart Institute and Cedars of Lebanon Hospital; Chairman of the Eight Annual Brotherhood Dinner of National Conference of Christians and Jews; and a member and Trustee of the Eaton Foundation at the University of Miami.

Between all his sporting and charitable ventures, his chief business interests have been in the mobile home industry, investments, holdings in Puerto Rico, and insurance.
MacDonald, born in Butte, Montana, has resided in Bal Harbour with his wife and two children since 1951.
