The leaves were still on the hedge (osage orange). I noted many burr oaks in the bottoms among the walnuts, cottonwoods, elms, hackberries etc;

Bobwhites were very common today and the dry hot summer has seemed to favor their increase in numbers. Usually late floods and rains destroy many nests and newly hatched young in the bottoms but this year there was nothing of the kind. I saw three large coveys but only shot

one. One covey was seen in a willow swamp, Another in a cornfield on the Parnell Place and a third on Hasty Creek All numbered about twenty or more. The Birds on Hasty Creek were very tame and I could easily have shot a number. They appeared to have nearly obtained the fall plumage.

Several Marsh Hawks seen during the day but none came near enough for a shot. One that we were watching made a dash at a Red-bellied Woodpecker in a willow but missed him. All those seen were in the dark, immature plumage.
