A few heard calling in the air today, the first of the season.

tolerably common along the creeks and in the hedges. They had just gained the fall plumage. 

Passerculus s. savanna. 
A few savanna sparrows seen about some swamps in the long grass. They were rather wild and none were taken.

[[underlined]] Zonotrichia querula [[/underlined]]. 
Harris sparrows were common today but I shot none myself. They had the usual habits notes and actions. This is the first date upon which they have been common.

[[/underlined]] Zonotrichia albicollis [[/underlined]]. 
I saw several white throated sparrows in a thicket and shot one but did not know what it was until I picked it up. This is rather a late date for them.
