Tuesday July 14.
Bad weather as yesterday.  Pack a large box & start in on the cover of another.  Get a bottle of good whisky from Mike.  It will do to give Stepanoff sometime when I need something from the store.  The Russians have baptized over 5,000 Indians in this country, but there are only 2252 Christians (!) alive, in the country.  There has been a missionary here for 27 years.  Afternoon clears a little & begin to load the boat.  Go up in the evening & arrange with Stepanoff to take 10 moose skins, 50 deer skins & a pond of powder.  Powder for Bean and I think I can make a good freight on the deer & moose skins as I hear there is a large demand for them in Frisco - something like 50¢ or [[symbol]] & I get them for 30¢ apiece.  Bean pays for the Barkas & we go down & turn in

Morning, go up & see Stepanoff and try to get the things I bought last night as a ship is in sight prob-

head and a harlequin duck by the way arrive at Kaltag late in the evening. I must try and raise another man here abouts.  Two are not enough.  Matfay and family and Yeto ditto are here and the other Indians are at Yakutzkalatenik.  Bad cloudly weather, very bold and a great deal of snow on the hills, but not much ice in the river.  Go to sleep very near 12.

Wednesday June 3
Start late - leaving Matushka, the old scoundrel, behind.  Take Yeto, as there is little prospect of raising an Indian at Yakutzkalatenik and there is no one else here.  I think I can keep him in order.  Buy 5 martens at Lower Kaltag.  Pass the mouth of the Fakaitsky river, chi peet and push on camping in a first rate place not very far below.  Weather a little better.  In the afternoon the wind makes an attempt to blow fair, but is so weak it don't pay
