[[left margin]] [[green number 14]] [[/margin]] burst of [[underlined]]Basileuterus ^[[2 green checks and the number 3 in purple]] nigrocristatus[[/underlined]] song, from area near me, considerably down hill from where Blue & Orange and Fire-bellies [[margin]] [[red ink]] Ruf [[/margin]] [[green number 16]] presumably were. Then a pair of Rufs ^[[2 green checks and the number 4 in purple]] appeared, moving steadily uphill, in the presumed direction of the Fire-bellies. Passed by [[underlined]] nigrocristatus[[/underlined]] area, but I don't think they were aware of the latter. Went past me to feed in tree uphill. One or both Rufs did a lot of singing. Then they flew back down hill, in the direction from which they had come.
All the time the Rufs were around, the [[underlined]]nigrocristatus[[/underlined]] (there were 2 of them, as I saw at this point) were absolutely silent. [[margin, in red]] Ruf [[/margin]] As soon as the Rufs had gone, they uttered quite a lot of loud songs and moved about quite actively. They were [[underlined]] much [[/underlined]] more conspicuous then than any [[underlined]]nigrocristatus[[/underlined]] I have seen around here at any other time!
The [[underlined]] nigrocristatus[[/underlined]] gradually quietened or moved away (the former I think). When a few minutes later I heard a burst [[margin, in blue]] 18 [[/margin]] of PR [[2 checks in green and the number 5 in purple]] song from the area toward which the Rufs had gone earlier!
All this would suggest that I saw the flock splitting. The Fire-belly(ies) and the Blue & Orange went uphill. The PR Altapetes stayed downhill, making no effort to follow the Tanagers. The Rufs started to follow the Tanagers, but then went back to re-join the RP's. [[margin, in red]] Litti [[/margin]] The Litti and no. XV's presumably stayed with the RP's all the time.
This would suggest that the large mixed flocks around here are composed of 2 sub-groups: (1) Tanagers, i.e. the Fire-belly, the Blue & Orange, and, possibly, Duburia; (2) The Atla
