Going up to a camp of CVC called "Korea". On path ca 8250 ft, see mixed flock 2:30 p.m. Area tall temperate (i.e. sub-tropical-looking) forest. Trees rather widely spaced. Lots of epiphytes. When first seen,
[[margin, in purple]] I HO [[/margin]] [[margin, in green]] 4 7 9 [[/margin]] group includes 2^[[two checkmarks, green]] [[male symbol]] Western Tanagers, 2^[[two checkmarks, green]] [[underline]] Compsocoma^[[2, purple]] [[/underline]] (usual species), at least
two species^[[two checkmarks, green; 4, purple]] of furnariid – dendrocolaptids, 1^[[one checkmark, 5]] Whitestart ([[underline]] probably [[/underline]] Slate-throat). Possibly others. Flock as a whole (and probably all species within it) ranging 25 – 60 ft up in trees. All noisy. Whitestarts fly catching. Furnariid – dendrocolaptids running up tree trunks. Westerns apparently getting insects off leaves ([[underline]] not [[/underline]] flycatching). Westerns certainly [[underline]] not [[/underline]] in lead. Most of the birds go uphill, quite gradually. Westerns follow [[underline]] repeatedly [[/underline]] for some minutes [[long dash]] then apparently [[underline]] stop [[/underline]] following. Rest of the birds disappear from my view, but Westerns certainly remain behind. Rather surprisingly the 2^[[two checkmarks, red]] [[male symbol]] Westerns associate closely with one another (repeatedly following one another) [[underline]] without any sign of overtly hostile movements or postures. [[/underline]] On this respect, the Westerns seemed very different from the Summer Tanagers I remember.)

There is intermittent fog throughout the period this flock is in view. Gets worse after [[underline]] Compsocoma [[/underline]] – furnariids, etc., disappear. Then, about 20 minutes later, I can [[underline]] hear [[/underline]] that there are more birds of other species not far from the Westerns. I can't see well enough to determine if there are the [[underline]] Comsocoma [[/underline]] – furnariid birds returning, or a new group appearing. Then I have to leave.
