to the eastward to the south of which is a bight where a landing might be had in calm weather, WW land & a stream behind it and a good deal of driftwood on the beach. The SE end of this id is a moderately high broken rocky point. The peaks were covered with fog. The longer id to the S of this is separated by a pretty wide passage with two small islets near its E opening. There is a low pt visible behind which we suppose there must be the anchorage spoken of by the natives which would thus open to the NW. beyond this was a long narrow low pt seemingly the end of this id. There was more land to the W of the passage but obscured by fog.
Island no 2 was composed of volcanic [[ivesia?]] or conglomerate in nearly horizontal layers coming to the waters edge near the North portion but underlaid by what appeared to be metamorphic slates to the southward and the SE cape capped with peculiar red cream colored earth.
Coast round the islands but find no landing place and the
