the masthead no breakers are visible,(we could see them 10 or 12 miles) notwithstanding the heavy groundswell - except just around the island where they extend on each side and in the ESE about half a mile.
The sea is to heavy to admit of making a landing & the top of the peak is evidently inaccessible even if we could land so we bear away for Unalashka. There is a slight greenish tinge as of mosses to the rock in a few places. But no apparant vegetation. The rock appears to be a pinkish gray color unstratified but with something like a cleavage in the WSW direction about 60°. There is no crater in it, the top is like a saw edge - The Ship Rock stands off about as far as 1/2 the length of the island from it. It is smaller than the plain, given by Sanycheff which is otherwise imperfect. Our observations on it for height are unsatisfactory on account of our drift by the surge and current.

Note in regard to rock off Amlia [[Ty one ?]] say there is none but a patch with 8 or 10 fms water
which breaks in the heaviest storms. Vsevidoff
