The presence of iron in varying degrees makes the schists particolored, and from fissures in them at about ten miles from Livermore issue the mineral springs of Agua Vida, owned by Mr. Mindenhall (circular & analyses) and supposed to be useful for kidney & rheumatic complaints The altitude of the springs is 1750 feet above the sea. 
Above the schists the clayey shales have in places decomposed into clay. I observed no fossils in them
