Morning cold, foggy, later clears.  Go ashore and interview Block (A.C. Co) and Smith (N.A.C. Co), take on some water.  Examine the rocks which are schistose and much contorted. 
[[vertical line indicating strikethrough]] In some of the gaps between the projecting points NW and SE of the harbor are patches of what appear to be tertiary beds which lie nearly horizontally abutting unconformably upon the schists.  One such patch SE from the entrance to the harbor shows a dark streak like coal.  Above the harbor a coal seam is reported about five inches thick and a piece of coal supposed to be from this seam picked up on the beach is compact, glossy & breaks conchoidally. (No. [[space]])
