The island is evidently smaller & lower than the plan given of it by Sarycheff and his soundings appear quite unreliable. The position differs on all the maps. Even Teb^[[i]]enkoff's two charts of the same date Nos XXVI and XXV give slightly different positions and one indicates the supposed reefs while the other omits it.
The Russian Admiralty Charts as usual appear more accurate in regards to the position than the later ones of Teb^[[i]]enkoff. The island is more to the North & East than any of the charts place it, according to our rather limited observations, which last were interfered with by the surge & current.
I may note here that when in Atka the foreman of the native hunting parties came one from the East end of Amlia, where he had been hunting sea-lions, and on enquring in regard to the high rock said to exist to the North of this part of the island, but disputed by Krusenstern, he stated that there was no such rock there, but there was a patch in the locality indicated with five to ten fathoms ^[[water]] on it, where in very heavy Northerly storms

breakers were visible. The rock may have sunk, or been broken away since the time it was originally reported.
Yesterday P.M. we obtained a bearing and altitude on the Vsevidoff Volcano which if we had not been materially set out of our course by the current would give it a height of 8868 feet. It is probably lower but nevertheless is one of the highest in the whole group of islands, and from its appearance I should say it was only second to Shishaldin.
