hear other birds in nearby scrub. Apparently (still) following the White-spectacled.

10:00 - 10:35 am. 8200 - 8250 ft. See another mixed flock in region of very mixed vegetation. All sorts of second growth and mature VSF. Flock as a whole is [[underlined]] enormous. [[/underlined]] Has a definite "nucleus" in lead. This nucleus

includes at least the following: [[3 pencil, 3 green, 3 blue checkmarks]] [[circled in pencil]] 1 [[/circled]] 2 - 4 [[underlined]] luteoviridis [[/underlined]] - types ([[underlined]] probably [[/underlined]] same species seen up hill yesterday), [[1 green, 1 blue checkmark]] [[circled in pencil]] 2 [[/circled]] 1 [[underlined]] Basileuterus coronatus [[/underlined]] (probably), [[1 green, 1 pencil, 1 blue checkmark]] [[circled in pencil]] 3 [[/circled]] 1 [[underlined]] Hemispingus superciliaris reyi [[/underlined]] (see broad gray crown), [[1 green, 1 blue checkmark]] [[circled in pencil]] 4 [[/circled]] 1 [[underlined]] cyanocephala, [[/underlined]] [[2 green, 2 pencil, 2 blue checkmarks]] [[circled in pencil]] 5 [[/circled]] 2 White-spectacled, [[1 pencil, 1 blue, 1 green checkmark]] [[circled in pencil]] 6 [[/circled]] 1 Whitebeard, [[1 pencil, 1 blue, 1 green checkmark]] [[circled in pencil]] 7 [[/circled]] 1 Empidonax-type flycatcher, [[1 pencil, 1 blue, 1 green checkmark]] [[circled in pencil]] 8 [[/circled]] 1 woodcreeper (same species seen with [[underlined]] luteoviridis [[/underlined]] - types yesterday),

[[left margin]] 2 blue, 2 pencil, 2 green checkmarks [[/left margin]] [[/left margin in pencil]] Also 2 BCBT's! [[circled]] 11 [[/circled]] [[/left margin]]

[[1 green, 1 pencil, 1 blue checkmark]] [[circled in pencil]] 9 [[/circled]] 1 Green t
Toucanet ([[underlined]] sic! [[/underlined]]) - apparently same species as in Panama - and [[1 green, 1 pencil, 1 blue checkmark]] [[circled in pencil]] 10 [[/circled]] 1 [[male symbol]] [[underlined]] piculus rubiginosus [[/underlined]] (identification definite). [[underlined]] This nucleus is very, very , coherent. [[/underlined]] All birds sticking close together. And all moving in same general direction very [[underlined]] rapidly [[/underlined]]. (The Toucanet certainly is an [[underlined]] integral [[/underlined]] member of the group.) all or most birds ranging 10 - 30 ft up.

Leadership obviously changing. White spectacled, woodcreeper, [[underlined]] cyanocephala [[/underlined]], and one or (more probably) more species of [[underlined]] Basileuterus [[/underlined]] and/or [[underlined]] Hemispingus [[/underlined]] in lead at different times. All species except [[/underlined]] cyanocephala, Piculus, [[/underlined]] and Empidonax-type vocalize frequently. [[underlined]] Flock as a whole very noisy [[/underlined]] !!!

There was some fighting among the White-spectacled. With elaborate displaying postures.

Possibly flock included [[2 green, 2 pencil, 2 blue checkmarks]] 4 White-spectacled at one time. And/or passed from territory of one (breeding) pair of White-spectacled into that of another pair - thus provoking a boundary dispute. (See also below.)

When flock was first seen, there was (were) [[1 green, 1 pencil checkmark]] [[circled in pencil]] 12 [[/circled]] 1 or 2 [[underlined]] PL [[/underlined]] Atlapetes in scrub 20 ft "behind" it. I don't know if the PL's followed the nucleus or not. (But they certainly must be considered at least temporary members of the flock.)
