New London Ct
Thursday
Jan Feb 16/60 } This morning crossed the river Thames to Groton. Ct. & travelled 1/2 mile to the residence of [[/right bracket]] [[underlined]] Capt. B. Buddington. [[/underlined]] Brother of [[underlined]] Capt. James Buddington [[/underlined]] the one who recovered the British Ship "Resolute" in Davis Straits some four years since & brot her saftely into New London Capt. B. B. & lady hospitality recd. & entertained me tho I was a perfect stranger. After spending [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] an hour with them Capt. B. desired that I should see his nephew, Capt. [[underlined]] Sidney O. Buddington [[/underlined]] living a mile distant whom he knew to be just the man to give ^[[me]] that kind of information I was in pursuit. Sooner than a short dream, Pegasus minus the wings, was at the door dancing before a Coffin that was ready for its human freight. Nature had freshly robed the Earth in White - the Winds had been bagged by Eolus - yet the Air was sharp as in Damascus. Our "shield" was Buffalo "hair & hide" which served [[strikethrough]] to [[/strikethrough]] admirably in keeping "Caloric" [[underlined]] within [[/underlined]] & the frigid [[underlined]] without!
