Capt. Tyson 1850 started 7th Feb on board McClellan barke [[?best guess]] of 307 tons owned by Perkins & Smith bound for Resolution Island. Went finally of to Melville Bay 7 he [[degree symbol]] to [[?best guess]] Devil's Thumb. Turned south 8th of July & sailed to 69 & passed over to "Hone Bay' last of July where 2 whales were captured in the ice. Then went into Merchants Harbor & cruised [[?best guess]] but caught no whales though several were seen. Then to Cape Searl 68 1/2 [[degree symbol?]] remained there a short time but no whales - 1st Sept started for Northumberland Inlet found [[clear?]] went into it & made Harbor S.W. side of the Inlet. -  "Keminisuik" [[?best guess]] Harbor". in Lat. 65 [[degree symbol]] - 25' - Long. 67 [[degree symbol]] - 7' Arrived in [[?]] Harbor about the 8th Sept. - cruised till 1st Oct. saw few whales but as they were shy a gales prevailing could catch none.

It was preferred, as no succesful whaling had been their reward, that the 1st Mates of the McCelland with 11 volunteers should Winter at Northumberland Inlet keeping the proper group for [[underlined]] whaling [[underlined]] in the Spring if such were possible. The heroic Volunteers were all single men except Capt. Buddington - Stenny [[?best guess]] Rogers & the colored man the Luther the cook [[strikethrough]] cook [[strikethrough]] - All were American but Frank Rogers [[?best guess]] a [[??]], Thos Evert an Englishman & the colored man "Bill". All were young men.
