The understanding was that the MC C should return to arrive at N.I. by July - Having put on shore provision, 2 boats & other instruments the McClelland sailed for Home with the remainder of the officers & crew.
The 12 went to work putting their domestic affairs in order - The house was built of the stone of the county then turf was filled in the wall - the snow walls on the outside making the walls six feet thick - the [[strikethrough]] walls [[/strikethrough]] window was in the roof & made of the entrails of the whale. The stove was for cooking & heating purposes the pipes of it running up thru. the roof - The roof was of seal skins sewed together placed on poles. The fuel was of coal left by the vessel but was exhausted about Jan. 1st. The alternative for fuel there was the [[strikethrough]] shell [[/strikethrough]] skelletons of ^[[4 or 5]] whales lying 30 miles south-ward, frozen in the ice. Transported the bone by means of dog sledges - Bone burnt will [[bring ?]] full of oil - Cut up by axes - cuts easily. One incident connected with the transport of this bone is worthy of record. One day in Feb. 1851 ^[[4 oClk AM]] Capt. Quayles with a companion "Clarke" started for the Bone depot on a dog sledge. The weather was very cold.
