May 17th 1860 - While in the office of Mr [[G.?]] this Morning a gentleman called enquiring for me - found him to be Deputy Sheriff, Connell, who informed me of the attachment of my trunk, clothing & Books - & also of the Pemmican & sledge on the instigation of Wm C. Pomroy. If there was a devil lurking in a man's Soul Pomroy has one in his X X X X

18 May Called on Mr. Martin ^[[Pres.]] of the Ocean Bank to whom I had a letter of introduction from Mr Ellis of Cin. Mr Martin wrote me a warm letter introducing me to M.O. Roberts one of the rich men of N.Y. Like hundreds of others to whom I have appealed he had no money. Had contributed so much in former years for various enterprises that he had now ceased. It is a fact that Mr Sterry, when the crew of Capt. Buddington were [[strikethrough]] attached [[/strikethrough]] attackted by the scurvy among the Esq living as they did & doing as they did, the consequences being that he ^[[recovered &]] enjoyed complete health while nearly every one on board the vessel was effected. Other consequences than good health ^[[to S.]] followed the wise course he pursued. He fell in Love with a bright eyed, plump Esquimaux [[strikethrough]] mada [[/strikethrough]] maid, who reciprocated all his kind advances. Had not a presumptory ^[[command]] [[strikethrough]] demand [[/strikethrough]] been sent to Mr S. to return to the "Georgiana" to resume his functions as Boat-Steerer, it is said by the Chief Officer, he would probably ^[[have]] been living there still. As it is - Every time our whalers put in to the island of [[?Kemminort]], a [[underlined]] "beautiful" [[/underlined]] - (the epithet is not original with me) Esquimaux boy, [[strikethrough]] boy [[/strikethrough]] with light hair, blue eyes, fair white skin, greets their sight!
In truth, ^[[there is a]] "Young America" ^[[that]] is[[strikethrough]] about [[/strikethrough]] 'half & half' at [[?Kemimort]] Island in Northumberland Sound!!
